Everything you should pack to go Geocaching

Everything you should pack to go Geocaching

So you want to go out Geocaching for the first time, you have your app downloaded, you know where you are going but you’re thinking, am I forgetting something?

You only need a few things to get going, but if you’re escaping the city for the day of it you might want to consider some extras.

Here’s everything you need to know about what you might bring.

Must have items

1. Smartphone: Use the Geocaching app on your smartphone to find hints and to log your Geocaching adventures.

2. GPS Receiver: Additionally, you can use a dedicated geocache data GPS device for when your signal is poor.

3. Pen/Pencil: Essential for signing logbooks in geocaches, remember a pen or pencil to mark what you discover.

Useful extras to have

1. Backpack: A dedicated geocache bag to keep all your gear easily accessible during your adventures.

2. Spare Batteries/Portable charger: Remember to charge your phone and take battery packs to avoid running out of charge mid-adventure.

3. Drinks and Snacks: Stay fuelled and hydrated with ample water, snacks, or even a packed lunch if you are going for a while.

4. Tweezers: Remember any TOTT, tricks of the trade, handy for extracting log sheets from small or tightly packed geocaches. Tweezers can save time during log signing. Don’t be like fellow Geocacher, Jessica Keesing Styles, she says “Always read the description! I walked over 1km, only to find the spot and discover it is absolutely TOTT needed, the tool being … a ladder.”

5. SWAG: Bring small items to trade with other Geocachers, adhering to “take something, leave something” principle. Remember items should be same or more value than what you take.

6. Geocache Repair Kit: Show your appreciation for cache owners by carrying spare containers and log sheets to replace damaged or full caches.

7. Torch: Essential for night time caching or exploring dark areas such as tree hollows.

8. Waterproof Notepad: Chris Galvin, a serious Geocacher, says “It is a brilliant way to make endless logs with, no matter the weather.”

9. Hi-Vis Vest: To stop the muggles knowing what you are up to, Bekah Jane says, “A hi-vis can easily camouflage you in most situations that you are searching in high muggle areas.”
