Wales is packed with beautiful coastlines, tall mountains, and wonderful valleys. But one place that you should find yourself this bank holiday is Bangor!
Bangor hosts cultural events and festivals throughout the year. A short drive from Bangor is Snowdonia national park, which hosts the tallest mountain in Wales, Mt. Snowdon.
Wills Lavender moved to Bangor two years ago and has been enjoying the benefits of its remoteness ever since.
“I have enjoyed being able to step out into the surrounding national parks.”
What Can I Do
Bangor is tucked away above Snowdonia national park, and just beneath Anglesey, an area of outstanding natural beauty. This Welsh city can cater to a myriad of tastes, providing the perfect playground for outdoor activities. The Menai Strait allows you to kayak, sail, and paddleboard.
Wills said: “When work piles up, having somewhere as nice as this on my doorstep is a breath of fresh air.
“Even if it’s just for a longer weekend, Bangor is perfect for someone who loves the outdoor experience.”
Bangor is also home of one of the largest Piers where you can enjoy scenic views and enjoy the Welsh coastline. On top of this, there are a myriad of castles you can explore within the area.
Climbing
The Slate Quarries is a great place for challenging climbs and dramatic landscapes. Snowdonia itself hosts various climbing spots, Tryfan, Idwal Slabs, and Clogwyn Du’r Arddu.
And for those trying to touch up on their skills, Beacon Climbing Centre is located just a short drive from Bangor. Gogarth along the sea cliffs of Anglesey and Holyhead Mountain both provide a range of beginner-friendly, and more experienced climbing routes.
Castles
Penrhyn Castle is situated just outside Bangor and is easily accessible by car. This 19th-century neo-Norman castle is known for its grand architecture, extensive grounds, and impressive interiors. This National Trust site offers guided tours, gardens, and woodland walks.
While Caernarfon Castle is just 15 miles from the city of Bangor, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most iconic castles in Wales.
It was built by King Edward I in the 13th century, it is known for its imposing walls and polygonal towers. Visitors can explore the castle’s history, climb the towers for panoramic views, and attend events and exhibitions.
Bangor is an idyllic hidden giant that is perfect for hosting all the activities your heart can desire.
