Discover the can’t miss outdoor spots and activities that make Bristol perfect for making the most of your bank holiday weekend.

Bristol’s blend of natural beauty, vibrant cultural scene and historic landmarks make it a fantastic place for outdoor enthusiasts to take a short break, as long as the weather is on your side.

Whether you’re looking for top notch food venues, an adventurous outing or a peaceful day in nature, there’s something for everyone in Bristol.

Great Places to Eat

Harry Dyers, an outdoor enthusiast who has been working for a software start up in the city for the past couple of years, gave us the rundown on what to get up to on your city break.

Wapping Wharf is a great spot to grab some food, there are loads of different places to eat. I’d recommend Cargo Cantina, the tacos there are good stuff.”

The Wharf is situated on the historic floating harbour, and is home to an array of bars, restaurants and shopping destinations.

Harry continued: “Once you’ve grabbed food you can go out and chill on the harbour wall by the river. It’s peaceful.”

If you’re after something a bit more cultural, there is always St Nicholas Markets in the heart of the old town.

There you can explore a labyrinth of street food and unique vendors, all tucked away amidst the historic architecture.

Outdoor Activities

As much as we all love to gorge ourselves on food, Bristol also has activities for the more adventurous sort.

Boasting a rich maritime history and extensive network of waterways, it’s a fantastic place to get up to some water sports.

“The harbourside is a great place to go paddle boarding, and you don’t need to register them for use.

“There are plenty of places you can hire them out, and if it’s your first time some of them offer coaching and instructors,” said Harry.

Bristol is full of scenic walks if a peaceful stroll is more your speed.

The newly renovated Chocolate Path walkway is located on the northern bank, winding along the Avon River. It offers beautiful views of the waterway and surrounding greenery.

“If you follow the path you can find yourself in the Leigh Woods which is a National Trust site. It’s a great place for walkers and cyclists as it’s got loads of different trails that can take you to landmarks like the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Once you get up there it has some wonderful views of the city,” explained Harry.

Outside the City

If you want to escape the city limits, Bristol is surrounded by rural and coastal hotspots. Whether it be bird watching at Chew Valley or the expansive grounds and gardens of Tyntesfield, there is plenty more to explore in the immediate area.

“If I’m looking to get out of the city for a bit, I usually head to Clevedon. It’s a lovely Victorian seaside town with beautiful coastal walks and views across to Wales,” said Harry.
