To bivvy or not to bivvy? That is the question

To bivvy or not to bivvy? That is the question

Ever fancied camping under the stars on a warm summer night but just didn’t know where to start? You just want to get out of the city and into the fresh country air without lugging around loads of equipment. Bivving might be for you, deriving from the French word “bivouac,” meaning a temporary encampment. It is a minimalist form of camping that strips away the complexities of traditional camping gear in favour of a more intimate experience with the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a novice explorer, here’s a beginner’s guide to bivvying that will help you confidently embark on your wilderness journey.

You will simply be sleeping sans tent. But why on earth would anyone want to do that? Bivvying is popular for the same reasons that camping is; you will be close to nature, create new adventures, and you can leave the city behind. But there are a few more perks that Bivouacking has to offer. The bivi kit is smaller and much lighter than a camping kit, you will be without the haste of pitching a tent before night falls and you can quickly get up and go in the morning.

All the problems that come with hitching up a tent on bumpy grounds will soon be forgotten when you just take out your sleeping bag and your roof are the stars. In good weather, there is no reason to feel cramped and sweaty. Confined to four ‘walls’ and it is much more discreet than pitching a tent.

Any location is good enough to bivvy, the beauty of it is that you can sleep just about anywhere, from coves to hilltops. The most scenic spots are perfect to set up a place to lay your head and shelter out for the night. Things to consider are what the weather is like, the terrain and local regulations. It’s important to be mindful of this so you don’t spoil the fun for everyone else.

Unlike traditional camping, bivvying requires minimal gear, making it an accessible option for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. Now what you need to know are the essentials to get you started.

What do I need?

Bivvy Bag or Shelter:

The cornerstone of bivvying gear, a bivvy bag protects you from the elements while allowing you to sleep under the open sky. Choose a waterproof, breathable bivvy bag that offers adequate protection from rain, wind, and insects. The cheapest Bivi Bags are perfect for those just starting and can be bought for under a tenner. But the only downside is that they’re not usually breathable which means the heat you radiate in the night will stay in the bag and usually mean you might wake up feeling a little damp.

Sleeping bag:

Invest in a lightweight, compact sleeping bag that provides enough warmth for the conditions you’ll be camping in. Consider factors such as temperature ratings, insulation type, and packability when choosing your sleeping bag.

A sleeping mat provides insulation and cushioning against the hard ground, ensuring a more comfortable night’s sleep. Look for a lightweight, inflatable sleeping pad that packs down small for easy transport. But if you are bivvying on a budget a foam roll up one will do just fine.

Then you need a Bivvy Bag. Basically, the Bivvy Bag is a waterproof cover for your sleeping bag. It’s lighter and smaller than tents so perfect for minimalist camping.

To choose a bivy bag, choose based on budget, weather expectations, and frequency of use.

If you’re on a budget, Budget Body Bag is your way to go. You can purchase these for about a fiver, but you will see how much vapour our bodies give off in one night, so you will be waking up in a rather damp sleeping bag.

A mid range Bivvy Bag, Army Bag go for around £40.

If you are willing to splash the cash and go Bivvying a lot or for multiple nights, you might want to invest in a  Luxury Bivvy Bag, as it’s more breathable.

Always wear warm clothes, use a bivvy bag as a waterproof cover for your sleeping bag, providing shelter while allowing you to sleep under the stars.

How to use a Bivy bag:

1. Slip it over your sleeping bag before heading out.

2. Pull it over your head when sleeping, leaving a gap for breathing.

3. Consider leaving a sleeping mat outside for comfort.

4. Use a waterproof bag for belongings and improvise a pillow.

Bivvying offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and solitude of the wilderness, with minimal gear and maximum freedom. By following these beginner’s tips and embracing the spirit of adventure, you can embark on a bivvy journey that will leave you feeling refreshed, inspired, and connected to the natural world. So pack your bivvy bag, lace up your hiking boots, and set out on a wilderness adventure that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
